I am really pleased to be making kettle corn for the upcoming Garden Fair 2014. This is taking place May 31 from 9:30a - 3:30 p at the Rochester, MN History Center. Admission is free if you bring a non-perishable food item, paper supplies or cleaning product.
Time for me to come out of hibernation and make some kettle corn this weekend. On the event calendar for the Kettle Corn House is a return visit to the Driftless Area of SW Wisconsin. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is a unique destination created through the collaborative efforts of the State of Wisconsin and the Ho Chunk Nation. The annual KVR Winter Festival is located near La Farge, WI - home of Organic Valley, the largest organic farming cooperative in the U.S.A.
The festival is Saturday, January 12th. Hours are 9 a.m. - 4:30 pm. Click on the Winter Festival logo below to see the calendar of events and activities planned for the day. Dog sledding, archery, xc-skiing, skating, sledding, chilli cook-off, silent auction, presentations in the Visitors Center and more are all part of the planned activities. Join us for a day of fun in the snow!
I was in Cresco, IA yesterday attending the Norman Borlaug Harvest Festival in Cresco, IA. Situated about 60 miles due south of my home in Rochester, Cresco is a community of approx. 4000 in NE Iowa. The forecast for beautiful weather was true - sunny with a high of 81F according to the Chamber of Commerce's LED message board that was keeping me updated all day long. While the bottom line for the day was much less than adequate I did meet some great people who were thankful I was there making kettle corn. My mini donut neighbor had his twin 7th grade grand daughters along and I was glad they were willing and able to lende a hand setting up. They live in Cedar Falls, IA and do a number of events in the summer with their grandfather. Something I hope to have my daughter, Elle, do with me when she is their age in a couple years.
So that was my last scheduled event at this point in 2012. After the roll I've been on it wasn't a memorable money making event. But that's only part of the reason I continue to enjoy owning and operating this small business. The satisfaction of providing a service to others and meeting people who appreciate it and are doing it themselves is reward in itself.
From fair food to exhibits it was a action packed day at the Minnesota State Fair Sept. 2nd. The beautiful weather and Labor Day weekend holiday made for lots of other people thinking "Let's go to the Fair!" Of course I had to check out what's what in the world of corn...
The Kettle Korn House will be bagging and selling kettle corn on-location for the 10th annual Alma Music and Arts Festival. Situated in the town park along the banks of the Mississippi River the festival will feature music all day, art and food from area musicians, artists and vendors. Our first time at the event because the KKH is usually at the Shawano County Fair during Labor Day weekend. I miss being in Shawano but I don't miss the long drive and the long six day event. Bring on the bands and let's have a good time closer to home. http://www.almawisconsin.com/events/musicartsfestival.html
UPDATE: Beautiful weather and good attendance made for a great day in Alma. After a crazy busy day at the MN State Fair the day before it was a sweet to slow down and a day by the river. The bands that played were really entertaining and I met some other vendors that I hope to see again somewhere down the road. If nothing else maybe at the 2013 Music and Arts Festival.
The week of August 15-19 was an excellent week for the Kettle Korn House. Three nights, Thursday-Saturday, featured country music in the Grandstand. Combine that with great weather and a well attended demo derby on Sunday and we had one of our best week of sales ever! Friday night was the stand out with steady traffic at our location throughout the day. I was concerned that our new location at the Dodge County Fair might have a negative affect but the spot was actually better. Fitting in with the high rent food vendors was no problem and I think we picked up customers we may have missed otherwise. So I have already put on my request with the fair managers, Don and Mary Jane Fabisch, that I'd like to make the temporary spot my new permanent home at their fair.
The weekend festival in Kasson was a great success! Working with my daughter, Elle, made me very proud. She was a big help and I look forward to more time spent nurturing her people skills. She enjoyed being "the cashier" and serving people. It made my first w/e with her as a ten yr old memorable and particularly rewarding. A big thank you to my parents, Jerry and Carolyn as well as my sister Wendy for their help transporting Elle to and from La Crosse so I could open and close the stand. My family is truly a gift that I admire and respect so very much.
My daughter, Elle, and I will be making and selling kettle corn as first-time vendors at the Kasson Festival in the Park this weekend. In a matter of minutes I will transform from my regular weekday job as a Customer Service Rep. in the mail room at IBM-Rochester to the Kettle Korn House Kettle Meister. Tonight they will be showing Cars 2 at dusk as part of the festival so I will try and get the kettle corn stand set-up and running in time to have kettle corn available for sale to movie goers. The weather forecast for tonight and Saturday looks good. Sunday could be questionable with a chance of rain. Kasson is small community approximately 20 miles due West of Rochester. What an absolutely fantastic weekend in Durand, WI! The Blues on the Chippewa music festival was a great three day event. Despite spotty weather Friday night and early Saturday the perfect combination of sunshine, low humidity and great music made for a profitable and entertaining weekend. Ms Allison was stylin' both herself and the Kettle Korn House once again. Floral arrangements and Allison's eye for detail on the front end of the House made this shack really look good.
There were so many good bands that played that I have to visit www.bluesonthechippewa.org to remember. A short list of bands that really stood out were
My friends Scott and Gareth were commenting on a photo I had posted on my Facebook Kettle Korn House page. As I remember there was a reference to looking contemplative while I was standing next to cast iron kettle I use to make my kettle corn. Being an armchair philosopher I started thinking about the history of the cauldron and it's use in alchemy. How many people over the ages have peered into a vat of various ingredients waiting for them to transform? It's still happening today.
